[2017 College Football Predictions Review] Mountain West

The college football season has come to an end.

All we have left is a bunch of bullshit bowl games that no one wants to watch and four teams in the playoffs that I’m sure will be exciting, but it feels like something is missing this year.

Anyway, with the end of the college football regular season, it’s time to take a look back at how I did on my predictions. I take my predictions extra serious every year. A lot of time goes into them, which is why I feel it’s important to go back and take a look at just how bad/good they were this year. I do it every year and it’s always fun to see how wrong/right I was back when I made these predictions in July.

So without any further distractions……

LEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEETTTTTTTTTTSSSSSSSSSSS DOOOOOOOOOO DISSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!

12. San Jose State Spartans

Record: 2-11

Predicted Record: 2-11

Bowl Game: No bowl game

Predicted Bowl Game: No bowl game

Nailed It or Failed It?: NAILED IT! When a team that was bad last season hires a head coach with no prior head coaching experience. I’m not entirely sold on that team to do well the next year. It’s just one of those things in life that makes sense.

11. Hawaii Rainbow Warriors

Record: 3-9

Predicted Record: 3-9

Bowl Game: No bowl game

Predicted Bowl Game: No bowl game

Nailed It or Failed It?: NAILED IT! These guys didn’t fool me man. Hawaii has been a pretty shitty program the last few years. Somehow, they surprised everyone and managed to go 7-7 last year and crack a bowl game for the first time in six years. I wasn’t buying it though. I knew this team would take a step back this season and that’s exactly what happened. There are a lot of beautiful things in Hawaii. Their football program isn’t one of them.

11. New Mexico Lobos

Record: 3-9

Predicted Record: 5-7

Bowl Game: No bowl game

Predicted Bowl Game: No bowl game

Nailed It or Failed It?: NAILED IT! Just barely though. The Lobos were actually worse than I thought they would be this year. I expected a little bit of a comedown following their 9-4 season last year, which is why I predicted them to barely miss a bowl game at 5-7. I don’t think anyone expected the Lobos to fall as hard as they did this season though.

9. Nevada Wolf Pack

Record: 3-9

Predicted Record: 5-7

Bowl Game: No bowl game

Predicted Bowl Game: No bowl game

Nailed It or Failed It?: NAILED IT! Nevada is a decent program that usually finishes around the 5-7 win mark, so take a shot at that and you’ll likely get it right. This season was an exceptionally bad one though for the Wolf Pack. They only got three wins on the season and all three of those wins came against some of the shittiest teams in the Mountain West. Not exactly a sign of good fortune going ahead for head coach Jay Norvell.

8. UNLV Rebels

Record: 5-7

Predicted Record: 5-7

Bowl Game: No bowl game

Predicted Bowl Game: No bowl game

Nailed It or Failed It?: NAILED IT! 100% correct on UNLV. I know a lot of people are in love with UNLV’s head coach Tony Sanchez, but what the hell has that guy done since moving into the FBS level from high school? He has a 12-24 record in three years now and the football team is just showing slight improvement each year. Next year is a big one for him. If he doesn’t get these guys to a bowl game, he’s done. Stick a fork in him.

7. Air Force Falcons

Record: 5-7

Predicted Record: 3-9

Bowl Game: No bowl game

Predicted Bowl Game: No bowl game

Nailed It or Failed It?: NAILED IT! Air Force has been a really good team the last three years. They’ve gone 28-12 in that time and came close to winning a Mountain West conference title in 2015. However, a lot of college football experts predicted a fall this year for the Air Force and that’s exactly what happened. The Falcons only returned one starter on defense, so it was kind of expected. I figured they might completely drop off the map with a three-win season, but they actually did better than I thought and almost became bowl eligible. They will return to a bowl game next year.

6. Utah State Aggies

Record: 6-6

Predicted Record: 2-10

Bowl Game: Arizona Bowl vs. New Mexico State

Predicted Bowl Game: No bowl game

Nailed It or Failed It?: FAILED IT! I need to learn to trust head coach Matt Wells a little more. First off, I used to be a big Matt Wells fan. When he first took over the Utah State job, the Aggies went 9-5 and followed that up with a 10-4 season. I was really high on Wells and thought someone at a bigger program needed to take a flier on him. He stuck around at Utah State instead and the team started trending downwards. They went 6-7 in 2015 and followed that up with a 3-9 year last year. I was selling my Matt Wells stock quicker than you can say “Utah”. I should’ve known. Once a good coach, always a good coach. Wells has the Aggies trending upwards once again and my 2-10 prediction looks completely stupid now.

5. Colorado State Rams

Record: 7-5

Predicted Record: 8-4

Bowl Game: New Mexico Bowl vs. Marshall

Predicted Bowl Game: New Mexico Bowl vs. Middle Tennessee

Nailed It or Failed It?: NAILED IT! I was only one game off of my prediction for Colorado State and I also managed to nail the bowl game. If I would’ve gotten their bowl opponent correct, I would be doing a celebratory dance in my front yard for all of my neighbors to see.

4. Wyoming Cowboys

Record: 7-5

Predicted Record: 9-3

Bowl Game: Idaho Potato Bowl vs. Central Michigan

Predicted Bowl Game: Hawaii Bowl vs. Houston

Nailed It or Failed It?: NAILED IT! Wyoming is a good football team. They are a well-coached team with a guy on their roster who has the talent to be a top pick in the NFL Draft (QB Josh Allen). Perhaps my expectations were a little high on this Wyoming team based on Allen’s talents, but I went all-in on a 9-3 record with the Cowboys vying for a Mountain West conference title. The Cowboys came up a little short this year, but they were still a talented football team.

3. San Diego State Aztecs

Record: 10-2

Predicted Record: 10-2

Bowl Game: Armed Forces Bowl vs. Army

Predicted Bowl Game: Arizona Bowl vs. Appalachian State

Nailed It or Failed It?: NAILED IT! Rocky Long has had the San Diego State Aztecs as a double-digit win program the last two seasons and once again the Aztecs achieved that goal this year. Yes, they came up short of a conference title, but a 10-win season is still a great one for a program like SDSU.

2. Fresno State Bulldogs

Record: 9-4

Predicted Record: 5-7

Bowl Game: Hawaii Bowl vs. Houston

Predicted Bowl Game: No bowl game

Nailed It or Failed It?: FAILED IT! Fresno State was one of the biggest surprises of the college football season. This is a team that has won four games combined the last two seasons and had hit a low point in their history. They went ahead and hired Jeff Tedford in the off-season and he proved once again that he’s a very good college football coach. Tedford led the Bulldogs to a 9-win season and an appearance in the Mountain West title game. It was one of the biggest turnarounds in college football this year and Fresno State fans should be excited going forward as long as Tedford sticks around.

1. Boise State Broncos

Record: 10-3

Predicted Record: 8-4

Bowl Game: Las Vegas Bowl vs. Oregon

Predicted Bowl Game: Idaho Potato Bowl vs. Ohio

Nailed It or Failed It?: NAILED IT! The Boise State Broncos are a very good football team. Are they a great football team? Not by any means. However, they have consistently been the Mountain West’s top team for over a decade now and once again they finish as the top dogs in the conference. Head coach Bryan Harsin has quietly put together a hell of a resume since Chris Petersen left for Washington and has kept the train rolling smoothly. The Broncos have finished  3 out of the last 4 seasons with double-digit wins. That’s a hell of an accomplishment no matter what conference you play in.

And that’s it for the Mountain West! Make sure you tune back in tomorrow as we take a look at how my predictions in the AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE played out!
