[2017 College Football Predictions Review] MAC

The college football season has come to an end.

All we have left is a bunch of bullshit bowl games that no one wants to watch and four teams in the playoffs that I’m sure will be exciting, but it feels like something is missing this year.

Anyway, with the end of the college football regular season, it’s time to take a look back at how I did on my predictions. I take my predictions extra serious every year. A lot of time goes into them, which is why I feel it’s important to go back and take a look at just how bad/good they were this year. I do it every year and it’s always fun to see how wrong/right I was back when I made these predictions in July.

So without any further distractions……

LEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEETTTTTTTTTTSSSSSSSSSSS DOOOOOOOOOO DISSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!

12. Ball State Cardinals

Record: 2-10

Predicted Record: 5-7

Bowl Game: No bowl game

Predicted Bowl Game: No bowl game

Nailed It or Failed It?: FAILED IT! I didn’t think Ball State was going to be very good this year, but they had been trending upwards the last few years. This last season was a major step back for the Cardinals and I’m not sure there’s any hope on the horizon.

11. Kent State Golden Flashes

Record: 2-10

Predicted Record: 2-10

Bowl Game: No bowl game

Predicted Bowl Game: No bowl game

Nailed It or Failed It?: NAILED IT! 100% spot on with this one. Kent State has always been a miserable garbage dumpster of a program. I didn’t expect them to improve this year and they definitely didn’t let anyone down. This is a program that has only played in two bowl games during their entire tenure and they are 0-2 in those games. Few things in life are guaranteed, but Kent State sucking is one of them.

10. Bowling Green Falcons

Record: 2-10

Predicted Record: 4-8

Bowl Game: No bowl game

Predicted Bowl Game: No bowl game

Nailed It or Failed It?: NAILED IT! Bowling Green hasn’t been good since Dino Babers left for Syracuse a few years ago. Head coach Mike Jinks has had a hard time sustaining the winning culture that Babers brought to the program and it’s likely going to get worse before it gets any better.

9. Eastern Michigan Eagles

Record: 5-7

Predicted Record: 3-9

Bowl Game: No bowl game

Predicted Bowl Game: No bowl game

Nailed It or Failed It?: NAILED IT! Eastern Michigan had a nice season last year. As a matter of fact, it was a little too nice for this program. Eastern Michigan generally averages about 1-2 victories a year. Last year, they broke the mold and got bowl eligible for the first-time since 1987. I expected a bit of a let down this year and there was one, but not as bad as I thought. It’s hard for a program like EMU to get to a bowl year-in and year-out.

8. Miami (OH) Redhawks

Record: 5-7

Predicted Record: 6-6

Bowl Game: No bowl game

Predicted Bowl Game: New Orleans Bowl vs. Marshall

Nailed It or Failed It?: NAILED IT! I didn’t expect much from Miami of Ohio this season. I figured they would be in the 5-6 win area and that’s exactly where they finished.

7. Buffalo Bulls

Record: 6-6

Predicted Record: 2-10

Bowl Game: No bowl game

Predicted Bowl Game: No bowl game

Nailed It or Failed It?: FAILED IT! I completely whiffed on this one. Buffalo is a program that hasn’t had a winning season in four years. They are coming off a 2-10 season where they looked like complete garbage. They still weren’t a very good team this season, but let’s give them some credit. They picked up enough wins to become bowl eligible…..but still didn’t manage to make a bowl. Let’s not rub that in though guys. I’m sure it’s a wound that still hasn’t healed.

6. Western Michigan Broncos

Record: 6-6

Predicted Record: 8-4

Bowl Game: No bowl game

Predicted Bowl Game: Dollar General Bowl vs. Troy

Nailed It or Failed It?: NAILED IT! Just barely though. After head coach P.J. Fleck took his boat and all his rowers to the University of Minnesota, I expected the Broncos to take a step back this season. After all, they went 13-1 last year and whenever a team comes from out of nowhere and has a year like that, it’s usually a flash in the pan. The Broncos were going to come back down to Earth and they did exactly that this year. They actually crashed a lot harder than I thought they would, but that’s life.

5. Ohio Bobcats

Record: 8-4

Predicted Record: 8-4

Bowl Game: Bahamas Bowl vs. UAB

Predicted Bowl Game: Idaho Potato Bowl vs. Boise State

Nailed It or Failed It?: NAILED IT! 100% spot on with the Bobcats. Anyone who has been paying close attention to Ohio since Frank Solich arrived knows damn well that this team is going to finish with around 6-8 victories every year. The Bobcats are good enough to do some damage in the MAC, they just aren’t good enough to do much outside of that. Let’s just go ahead and predict Ohio’s record next season. 8-4.

4. Northern Illinois Huskies

Record: 8-4

Predicted Record: 7-5

Bowl Game: Quick Lane Bowl vs. Duke

Predicted Bowl Game: Bahamas Bowl vs. UTSA

Nailed It or Failed It?: NAILED IT! Northern Illinois has generally been a pretty good team under head coach Rod Carey. When he first arrived, the program was averaging 11 wins a year. The team has dipped the last few seasons, reaching a low last year with a 5-7 record and missing out on a bowl game for the first time in forever. Well, good coaches get good programs turned around and that’s what Rod Carey did this season. The Huskies are bowl eligible once again and they should be even more improved next season.

3. Central Michigan Chippewas

Record: 8-4

Predicted Record: 4-8

Bowl Game: Idaho Potato Bowl vs. Wyoming

Predicted Bowl Game: No bowl game

Nailed It or Failed It?: FAILED IT! Oops! I should have known man. Looking back at the way the Chippewas have finished the last five-plus seasons gives you a feel on how they are going to finish. In 2012? 7-6. 2013? 6-6. 2014? 7-6. 2015? 7-6. And then last year? 6-7. Why the hell did I predict this team to go 4-8 when everyone knows they will finish around the 6-7 mark? C’mon man! I need to be better than that.

2. Akron Zips

Record: 7-6

Predicted Record: 6-6

Bowl Game: Boca Raton Bowl vs. FAU

Predicted Bowl Game: Camellia Bowl vs. Georgia Southern

Nailed It or Failed It?: NAILED IT! 99% spot on with the Akron Zips. The only thing I missed was that these guys would somehow sneak into the MAC title game where they would eventually lose to Toledo. All in all, it was a good season for Terry Bowden and his boys. Akron is generally a dumpster fire of a team and whenever you can make it to a conference title game, that has to be considered a good season.

1. Toledo Rockets

Record: 11-2

Predicted Record: 10-2

Bowl Game: Dollar General Bowl vs. Appalachian State

Predicted Bowl Game: Quick Lane Bowl vs. Indiana

Nailed It or Failed It?: NAILED IT! I actually nailed Toledo’s season 100% spot on. Like every game. Going through my game-by-game predictions of Toledo that I did in July, I predicted that they would win every game they played, outside of road games against Miami (FL) and Ohio. That’s exactly what happened to the Rockets this season. They were far and away the best team in the MAC by a country mile and it wasn’t even close. Something tells me it will be more of the same next season.

And that’s it for all the MAC-TION! Make sure you tune into tomorrow to see a recap of how my predictions went down in the MOUNTAIN WEST CONFERENCE!!!!!!!!
