Three Things I Like About The Eagles This Season:
-Defense: I love what the Eagles are bringing to the table on the defensive side of the ball. Brandon Graham and Fletcher Cox are elite players at their position and the other two guys on the defensive line are pretty good players as well. The Eagles also have solid linebackers in Jordan Hicks and Nigel Bradham. The secondary is the main concern of the defense. The Eagles improved when they added Ronald Darby to the roster a few weeks back via a trade with the Buffalo Bills. Darby had an absolutely stellar rookie season with the Bills, but his play fell off a little bit last season and the Bills seemingly gave up on him. The Eagles have to be pumped that they got a young guy who’s not far removed from a great season, but they also have to be concerned because they have no depth at corner and if Darby plays like he did last year, it’s gonna be a long season for them. Good thing Philly has some damn fine players at safety to help make up for their depth at CB. Overall the Eagles are bringing an impressive defense to the table….at least on paper.
-Offensive Line: I’m not exactly in love with the Eagles offense, but I do love their offensive line. Jason Peters is getting up there in age, but he’s still a great player. Lane Johnson is one of the best tackles in the league and if you don’t believe me…just ask the Eagles fans who witnessed their offensive line play last year with him out. Brandon Brooks is one of the best guards in the league and Jason Kelce has been a consistent player for Philadelphia for six seasons now. If the Eagles struggle at all on offense this year, it won’t be because of their offensive line play.
-Good Overall Roster: Looking at Philadelphia’s roster from top-to-bottom, I have to admit it’s pretty good. I already mentioned their defense and their offensive line. Those positions alone should guarantee that the Eagles are fighting for a playoff spot. The Eagles also have a pretty good QB in Carson Wentz. Yes, he had a up-and-down season last year and the guy looks like another version of Alex Smith to me, but I think he’s capable of being a good quarterback in the NFL for years to come. He will play a huge factor for Philly this year in the playoff race. The Eagles don’t have a whole lot of weaknesses outside of depth at wide receiver and corner. It wouldn’t shock me at all to see this team playing post-season football this year.
Three Things I Hate About The Eagles This Season:
-Doug Pederson: I was never sold on Doug Pederson as the guy when the Eagles hired him and I’m still not. Pederson came over to the Eagles from the Kansas City Chiefs where he was the offensive coordinator….and didn’t even do a good job in that position. The Eagles hired him in an effort to get back to their glory days of the “Andy Reid Era” and I just don’t know if it’s going to work out. Philly has a good roster like I mentioned. This team should be expecting playoffs this year. If they don’t make it, I think we’ll all know why.
-The Schedule: Philly plays a pretty brutal schedule this year. First of all, they play in the NFC East and every team in the NFC East is capable of making the playoffs in my opinion. Secondly, the Eagles have to play the AFC West this season, another division that has four teams that could potentially make the playoffs. On top of that the Eagles have to travel to Carolina and Seattle, two teams that are also playoff contenders in my eyes. Like I mentioned earlier, Philly plays a brutal schedule and this season really could go a whole lot of different ways for them.
-Wide Receivers: I’m not a fan of what the Eagles are bringing to the table in the wide receiver department. Last year their leading receiver was a tight end and it wouldn’t shock me to see that happen again. Eagles fans were pumped to get Alshon Jeffery in the off-season, but that guy is no longer an elite wide receiver. He’s extremely injury-prone and his play has dropped off since storming into the league years ago. I think Eagles fans need to pump the brakes on him a little. Torrey Smith will be a nice addition for Carson Wentz when it comes to the deep route department, but that’s about it. And then there’s Nelson Agholor. Yuck. Good luck with these guys Carson.
