I don’t know what to make of these guys….I really don’t. I have a feeling that this season could go a number of ways for the Pelicans. They could potentially sneak into the Western Conference playoffs with a 7th or 8th seed. That wouldn’t shock me at all. Anthony Davis is a good enough player that if he can get some actual help this season, the Pelicans could be decent or better than a lot of people think. Another way this season could potentially go is completely off-the-cliff. Alvin Gentry is a mediocre coach who is coaching a team with mediocre talent and not a lot of depth. It really wouldn’t shock me at all to see this thing get ugly either.

Personally, I have the Pelicans falling somewhere in the middle. When you have a player like Anthony Davis (who is one of the best big men in a league devoid of them), you can never count this team completely out. I think they will finish somewhere about where they finished last season. Close to a playoff spot, but not quite close enough. There just isn’t a whole lot of talent on this team to work with outside of Davis and Jrue Holiday. Tyreke Evans is a decent player, but he’s battling a ton of injuries and other health problems right now and his future is uncertain. Buddy Hield is a rookie and there’s no telling what he’s going to provide this year and Omer Asik is MEH.

Needless to say, when you look at this team going into the season, you shouldn’t have a lot of high hopes for them. They just don’t look like a team that can compete with the other top dogs in the Western Conference. I’m personally really interested in what’s going to happen with Anthony Davis going forward. If the Pelicans come up short once again, does he start making a stink about the lack of talent around him? Or is he one of those guys who  isn’t going to complain and just goes out and is the ultimate professional (and people start questioning his lack of leadership?) no matter what? Will Alvin Gentry survive another disappointing season in New Orleans? This season may not be a good one for the Pelicans, but it could end up being extremely interesting.
