Last year I wasn’t very high on the Detroit Pistons. I personally had them pegged as somewhere near a 20-win team and they absolutely smashed my expectations. Let’s call that a lesson learned. This year though? I’m really high on the Pistons and that might not necessarily be a good thing for this team as I have a tendency to jinx teams that I fall in love with in the off-season.

Stan Van Gundy is a very underrated NBA head coach. In ten seasons as an NBA coach, he’s only missed the playoffs once. This team showed vast improvement under SVG’s belt last season and as everyone knows….consistency in sports is an extremely underrated trait. To me, it’s not a question of if the Pistons will make the playoffs, but how far exactly they will go. SVG is definitely the guy to lead this team. If the Pistons end up surprising people and make the Eastern Conference Finals (a task I think is achievable), I think people will finally start giving my boy SVG some respect.

Of course, it doesn’t hurt that he has a pretty good team to work with. Andre Drummond is a stud and is one of the best centers in a league that is devoid of them. His presence on the team gives the Pistons a huge advantage every night and he should continue to improve….which is scary. Throw in Reggie Jackson and Tobias Harris and the Pistons have a quality underrated threesome that will end up surprising more than a few people this season.

Watch out for this team this year Eastern Conference. They are going to be better than you think.
