Casual Fan Preview: AFC South

Here we are again: The premise for these previews is simple. I did no research outside of what I typically read on Twitter and wrote down my thoughts. Then I did a little bit of research (meaning I read Dustin James’ previews) just so I don’t look like a complete idiot, and you feel like you got something of value out of reading this.

AFC South

Tennessee Titans

Presearch: Apparently Mike Mularky is a terrible head coach and doesn’t know how to build around his quarterback so they should be a mess. I like Marcus Mariota, and I think they picked up DeMarco Murray, so that’s cool. Titans might be sneaky good in a pretty weak division.

Research: after looking at Mularky’s resume, I’m not sure how he’s in the league. I watched Tajae Sharpe have a good preseason game against the Panthers so maybe keep an eye out for him. The combo of Murray and Derrick Henry could take a lot of pressure off Mariota. Their defense is better than given credit for. I stand by my “Titans might be sneaky good” prediction.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Presearch: I keep seeing people on Twitter say that Blake Bortles is good, but I’m not sure that I believe them. Allen Robinson is legit, though, at least that’s what Steve Cook told me. Do they still have Julius Thomas? I remember him being good with the Broncos and then not hearing about him with the Jaguars. Offense might be fun to watch if Bortles is as good as people seem to think he is.

Research: Gus Bradley seems like a terrible head coach. They have Mercedes Lewis, who I’ve heard of for years and still don’t know if he’s any good. Which probably means he’s not any good. They got Malik Jackson and a really young defense that might surprise people. Alright, I get the hype on the Jaguars, but I’m still not buying them.

Houston Texans

Presearch: Didn’t they finally let go of Arian Foster? That’s like the only offensive guy anyone knew on the Texans for years. Oh, and Andre Johnson. Now they have DeAndre Hopkins and Brock Osweiler, so that’s something. JJ Watt will terrorize offenses and maybe Jadeveon Clowney will make a play if he plays. Still their division to lose. And they could definitely lose it.

Research: I think they’ll challenge the Colts for the division. I don’t know if Osweiler is any good, but he’s better than the guy they had last year, and DeAndre Hopkins is the real deal. Plus, they got J.J. Watt. He’s a game changer on defense, and there aren’t many of those left in a league that favors offense and the most dominating defensive player in the league.

Indianapolis Colts

Presearch: Andrew Luck won’t be as bad as he was last year. TY Hilton will be good. Are they still planning on relying on Frank Gore? Cause that seems like a mistake. Their defense will be trash. Did they re-sign Chuck Pagano? I feel like there’s no way they re-signed Chuck Pagano. They won’t bomb as bad as they did last year, but they’re still slightly behind the Texans. Remember when they tried that fake punt thing last year? That was fun.

Research: I’ll be damned, Chuck Pagano is still the head coach. Everything still comes down to Luck. If he’s great, the Colts will win plenty of games. If he’s garbage, the team is garbage. He’ll have to bail the defense out of a lot of bad situations.

Division Winner: Houston Texans
